From Deschooling Society to Deschooling the University
In the early 1970's, Ivan Illich wrote a short book entitled 'Deschooling Society' (click on the following icon for an online version of the book Deschooling Society ). This book warns against the consumerisation (and 'empty' consumption) of education, and, the potential virtue of pursuing education and learning for higher ideals. The course team feel that in light of recent events where the fees/funding of University education is concerned - Illich's argument has actually gained more relevance, rather than become outdated during the 40 years of its availability.
Therefore, read (in particular) Chapter 3 of Deschooling Society (Ritualisation of Progress); Chapter 6 (Learning Webs); and, the final Chapter 7. These are only brief chapters and will not take long. Having done this:
1. Read through the following lecture (relating to creativity, and the generation of new ideas in the 'HE in FE' setting)

2. In conjunction with this, watch the following 'TED Talks' clip of Sir Ken Robinson (discussing "schooling" creativity & imagination)

3. Consider and feedback on/discuss (in the dialogue box below) the following prompts and questions:
a. Reflect on your own methods of delivery, interaction/engagement, and assessment
b. In what ways do you think that you can begin to engage 'creatively' with these aspects (so as to enhance the engagement/creativity of your students)?
c. What 'obstacles' do you think you might encounter, if you were to try to implement some of your ideas/changes?
